Anand: A forgotten hero

"for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour "

- This is how the government of the day defines India's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.

At last , the hype surrounding Sachin's retirement has come to an end. The government, just like any tv channel trying to improve its TRP ratings, has tried to improve its ratings by awarding Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar,

The major question that comes to our minds is why Vishwanathan Anand was not awarded Bharat Ratna prior to Sachin. If the award has to be given to sports field, then why it has to be Sachin instead of Anand.

Anand break into international Chess arena when Chess was not even considered as a sport in India.Chess was completely dominated by Russians .Such was the Soviet dominance in Chess that they held the Championship title from 1975 to 2000. He was the lone indian Chess player for years.

He was India's first Grand Master. Thanks to him ,India has close to 40 grandmasters today.
He was the first recipient of India's highest Sporting honour - Rajiv Khel Ratna in 1991 . On a lighter tone, Sachin has not even scored an ODI century by then. Anand got India's second highest civilian honour - Padma Vibhushan in 2007 . Sachin got in 2008.

Anand remained in top 3 rankings for 12 continuous years from 1996-2008. Sachin was number 1 in cricket for years  but there were contenders for him at one point or another .

Anand may have lost the championship now,but he was a record 5-time champion. Both Sachin and Anand share clean image , gen-next inspirational icon and they are the undisputed heroes of their games. But India has a cricket base when sachin started and Sachin built on it and took Indian cricket to next level(along with some outstanding cricketers).
But for Anand, he built the base for Chess by himself and remains its only icon to this date.
