There are some things in which we can't beat the old school of thought . Our grandmas and grandpas are literally walking Ph.d's which our previous generation completely failed to tap.What we do today with more sophisticated technology was made simpler by them 60 years ago. If i were to make a kid stand in front of you and ask you to determine whether the kid has crossed the age of 5 or not, it is almost impossible for us to find out. However, the government school teachers of previous generation had a unique way to find that out.
During good old days, the babies will wear bangles made of a certain wood. Today, we almost forgot that. The bangle will be made of "vasambu", which will act as a repellent for ants and other small insects. It is called as " Pillai marunthu" (infant medicine). Some doctors prescribe it while some others ask to refrain from it.I tried googling it and it didn't yield any results.
Coming back to our question, how to determine the age of the kid. In good old days, there were no birth certificates and the minimum age for joining the school is five. Teachers will ask the kids to do the following. Keep the right hand straight in the air and bend it towards your head and touch the left ear. If the kid is able to touch the left ear, the kid has completed 5 years of age. Even though this method may not be fool proof,i wonder how they invented this unique method. Nevertheless to say, google has no idea about this method.

VASAMBU IS USED TO MAKE FLUENT SPEECH ALSO.
